CarLotz is seeking a Controller to join the Finance and Accounting Team in Richmond, VA. The Controller will be responsible for all areas relating to financial controls and reporting, including developing, documenting, and maintaining accounting policies and procedures to ensure reliable controls and accurate and timely financial statements.

The Controller will work closely with the CFO and other senior leadership & should have strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Partner with CFO and other finance and accounting team members to:
    • Obtain a thorough understanding of the financial reporting and general ledger structure
    • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close
    • Observe, develop, document, and maintain accounting processes and procedures
    • Create an accounting process manual
    • Support audits by preparing documentation and schedules
    • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of wire, ACH, and positive pay transactions
    • Support budget and forecasting activities
  • Collaborate with the other finance team members to support department goals and objectives
  • Supervise the general ledger group to ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met
  • Advise staff on non-routine financial reporting matters
  • Develop and implement new procedures to enhance department workflow
  • Provide training to new and existing staff as needed
  • Handle personnel issues relating to staff conflicts, absenteeism, performance issues, etc.
  • Work with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitor and advise on the progress to enhance the professional development of staff


Required Education and Skills:

  • 8 + years of relevant work experience in finance and accounting roles, including policy and procedure creation, general ledger, monthly closing activity, financial reporting, internal controls, team leadership, and financial analysis and budgeting/forecasting.
  • QuickBooks experience and other financial systems knowledge
  • Experience working in a start-up and/or high-growth organizations that have experienced rapid change is strongly preferred
  • Proven experience and success in controllership role or function
  • A strong understanding of GAAP accounting
  • Ability to work with CarLotz Technology team to automate accounting processes and procedures to continuously improve efficiency
  • Proven ability to multi-task, problem-solve creatively, and drive projects to completion with limited oversight
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A passion for finance, accounting, and analysis
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in accounting or related field

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Lead

CarLotz has an exciting opportunity for a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Lead in Richmond, VA. This teammate will report directly to our Director of Marketing and will plan and deploy SEO, social media and website initiatives to support each CarLotz location across the country.   • Proven success strategizing and running Google and Facebook campaigns
  • Proven success in SEO space at an agency or in house

Job Responsibilities:

  • Completes payments and controls expenses by receiving, processing, verifying, and reconciling invoices.
  • Reconciles processed work by verifying entries and comparing system reports to balances.

CarLotz is seeking an Accountant to perform financial accounting and analysis in our fast paced, rapidly growing organization. Responsibilities will include managing, recording and analyzing various financial accounts; preparing month-end journal entries supporting the financial closing; and developing policies and procedures and monitoring controls around key financial processes.

Essential duties:

  • This position is expected to have the primary responsibility for the accounting and reporting for one of the Company’s most significant lines of business – the Wholesale Division. As such, this position will be responsible for:
  • Managing and documenting the accounting processes surrounding the Wholesale Vehicle Line of Business;
  • Documenting the Operational Purchasing and Selling Process, identifying and developing key controls, and testing regularly ensuring appropriate functionality. This would include:
    • Recording all vehicle purchases and sales;
    • Recording any liability for debt relating to floorplan purchases
    • Managing and reporting on the location and status of all inventory;
    • Monitoring and accounting for AR relating to any auction sales
    • Account for all costs associate with inventory including any purchasing fees, transportation charges, repairs etc., and ensure inventory valuation is comprehensive;
    • Prepare detailed inventory analysis monthly incorporating all associated costs
    • Evaluation of market value of inventory based on latest market data – developing and managing any reserve for potential losses;
    • Manage and account for all payments, receipts, and liabilities from our financing partners and reconcile accounts monthly;
    • Build and document processes to ensure all costs associated with a vehicle is captured timely;
  • Prepare detailed profitability analysis monthly
  • Prepare executive report monthly detailing the operations of the Business Line

Additional duties:

  • Preparation and Review of Financial Statements
  • Cash management and forecasting for the Wholesale Line of Business
  • Partnering with, supporting and advising the Business Unit Head
  • Provide support and liaison with the Company’s External Auditors


  • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting, financial controls and financial reporting
